Department of English

Faculty of Arts

Message from the HOD

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of English. Indeed, we are thrilled to have you join our vibrant linguistic and literary family. As a department committed to delivering flexible and effective educational experience to our students, we make accessibility top priority as we strive to help you develop language competencies, analytical and creative minds. Our aim is to help you develop knowledge and skills in English language and literature in order to be equipped to succeed in the rapidly globalising world. The Bachelor of Arts (BA) English programme of the university is designed to include the language and literature components which are intended to build proficiency in pronunciation, articulateness in speech, correctness of grammar and usage, and style that are appropriate for use in various administrative, professional, and creative writing domains. In addition, we strive to ensure that upon successful completion of the BA English programme, our graduates are equipped to embark on postgraduate studies in English language or literature, if they so desire.

In this vein, the Department also offers MA English and PhD English programmes that are carefully designed to expose and deepen students’ knowledge of the English language and literature. The three areas of specialisation at the postgraduate level are English language, Literature-in-English, and Comparative literature.

History of the Department

At its 101st Reg ular Meeting of Senate, held on Wednesday 16th February 2022, Senate received, considered and approved the request of the Dean, Faculty of Arts, for the unbundling of the Department of Languages. From the defunct Department of Languages, two new departments were created. These are:

  1. Department of English
  2. Department of Linguistics, Foreign and Nigerian Languages.

The Department of English offers one undergraduate and two postgraduate programmes. The programmes are as follows:

Undergraduate programmes:

  • BA English

Postgraduate programmes

  • MA English
  • PhD English

Even though this is a brand new Department, we look forward to being the best in the Faculty. We are working assiduously to build up capacity as well as quality delivery in our programmes in the Department. Within the next one year, we hope to have increased our student enrolment through our quality delivery as well as surpass the expectation set by the Department of Languages from which we came out.

Our Vision

To be known as the most learner-focused and learner-sensitive programme of the National Open University of Nigeria.

Our Mission

To provide opportunities for the development of language competences, creative and critical/analytical minds as well as a consolidation of earlier skills so as to equip learners for life in a rapidly globalising world.

Our Philosophy

To provide our students with in-depth, functional, cost-effective, flexible learning at a distance so as to enhance their skills in the theory and use of the English language as well as sensitive and critical appreciation of literature, which are necessary for adequate expression and self-actualisation in the global context.
