Entry Requirements

To be admitted into B.A. Philosophy, a candidate is required to meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Level

A minimum of five credits at not more than two sittings in the GCE, O’ level, SSCE, NECO examinations or its equivalent in relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

200 Level

A minimum of 3 credits passes in IJMB, ND, NCE or its equivalent in relevant subjects including English Language.

Aims and Objectives

AIMS

The B.A. (Hons) Philosophy, through the Open and Distance Learning mode, is designed to provide functional, flexible and qualitative training in major areas of philosophy; Metaphysics, Epistemology, Logic, Ethics, African Philosophy, History of Philosophy, and Social and Political Philosophy.  It seeks to develop the intellectual abilities of students to enhance their critical, analytical, interpretive, comparative and problem solving skills.In line with the central objective of the National Open University of          Nigeria, which is to provide a wider access to education generally and ensuring equity and equality of opportunities, especially University education; the programme aims atproviding a broad, sound and solid foundation in philosophy. It also aims to provide education in, and expose students to the traditional branches of philosophy as a firm base for intending professional academic philosophers, equip students with problem-solving skills capacities, help train a workforce with requisite transferable work skills, enhance the ability of students to organise and criticise ideas and issues, orient students towards developing the philosophical minds conducive to a pluralistic society such as Nigeria. Equally, the programme aims to seek to link academic/professional philosophy with social existence by opening to the students a knowledge that is grounded in ethics and responsiveness to needs of society. In addition, the programme will service other programmes of the university where courses in philosophy are required as necessary for graduation.

3.2     OBJECTIVES

The BA (Hons) Philosophy programme is designed to equip students with the critical, analytical, interpretive skills of philosophy needed for success in today’s world. Thus, upon successful completion of the programme, a graduate should be able to:

  • Apply his skills and knowledge of philosophy in solving problems.
  • Exhibit critical and analytical ability
  • Conceive and communicate ideas
  • Serve as philosophy teachers in Nigerian schools and colleges
  • Provide reasoned advice to governments and other organisations.
