Message from the HOD
Hello! You are pleasantly welcomed to the Department of English. Starting as one of the oldest academic units in NOUN in January 2004, the Department is one of the newest full-fledge academic Departments in the University as it emerged from the unbundling of the former department of Languages in February, 2022. The Department offers a B.A. English degree as well as M.A. and PhD programmes at postgraduate level. The programmes lead to production of senior and Management level manpower to meet government and corporate organizational needs in liberal arts, communication and education within the country and around the globe.
From the graduation of the first set of B.A. English in 2013, the Department on 26th March, 2022 scored another first as it had the only PhD graduating students (three of them) featured at the NOUN convocation ceremony.
Welcome to English!
Dr. Felicia Oamen
Head, Department of English
History of the Department
At its 101st Regular Meeting of Senate, held on Wednesday 16th February 2022, Senate received, considered and approved the request of the Dean, Faculty of Arts, for the unbundling of the Department of Languages. From the defunct Department of Languages, two new departments were created. These are:

- Department of Linguistics, Foreign and Nigerian Languages.
The Department of English offers one undergraduate and two postgraduate programmes. The programmes are as follows:
Undergraduate programmes:
- BA English

Even though this is a brand new Department, we look forward to being the best in the Faculty. We are working assiduously to build up capacity as well as quality delivery in our programmes in the Department. Within the next one year, we hope to have increased our student enrolment through our quality delivery as well as surpass the expectation set by the Department of Languages from which we came out.
Our Vision
To be known as the most learner-focused and learner-sensitive programme of the National Open University of Nigeria.
Our Mission
To provide opportunities for the development of language competences, creative and critical/analytical minds as well as a consolidation of earlier skills so as to equip learners for life in a rapidly globalising world.
Our Philosophy
To provide our students with in-depth, functional, cost-effective, flexible learning at a distance so as to enhance their skills in the theory and use of the English language as well as sensitive and critical appreciation of literature, which are necessary for adequate expression and self-actualisation in the global context.
